Dr. Vanderloos helps women from in and around Shreveport, LA with urogynecology issues affecting the pelvic floor, bladder, and kidneys.
Urinary incontinence is a common problem among all ages of women, but in particular, middle-aged and older women. 60% of women between the ages of 45 and 55 experience frequent episodes of UI. Also known as bladder control loss, urinary incontinence can occur in a number of ways. These include leaking urine while sneezing or coughing, inability to completely empty bladder, intense need to urinate often and inability to get to the toilet in time.
Urinary incontinence is a symptom that is caused by a variety of things, including childbirth, pregnancy, aging, hysterectomy, menopause, and neurological disorders.
Fortunately, there are many treatment interventions and methods that are available to women, but these have side effects, recovery times etc. One noninvasive approach is the Emsella treatment. Its goal is to treat and strengthen the pelvic floor to help improve the quality of life. You may be wondering, what is Emsella?
WHAT IS EMSELLA?
What is Emsella? It is a non-invasive treatment for pelvic muscles weakened by childbirth or aging. Although the treatment gained fame fairly recently, it has existed since 1993, when BTL developed it.
The Emsella treatment uses a special chair and electromagnetic technology to strengthen pelvic muscles.
PROCEDURE DETAILS
During the procedure, the client sits in a special chair that uses electromagnetic technology. This electromagnetic energy is of high intensity, and it is focused on the pelvic floor. This treatment helps to stimulate the muscles, which leads to strength. The therapy also helps to restore the biofeedback loop for control.
Many women are told that to strengthen the area, they should do Kegel exercises. While this is good advice, and Kegels can help strengthen the pelvic floor, it is challenging to do a lot of them correctly and regularly. The Emsella treatment delivers thousands of contractions to the muscles in the area, and a single session is equal to performing over 11,000 Kegel exercises.
During a session, the client sits in the chair, fully clothed, and can read or watch a favorite show. After 30 minutes, the session is complete. During the procedure, the only sensation women normally have is modest tingling and slight muscle contractions. Afterward, there is no recovery time, and normal activities can be resumed right away.
LENGTH OF A TREATMENT PLAN
Just like you cannot build long-term muscle tone after one weight-lifting session, the desired outcome from Emsella takes more than one session. For the best results, treatment consists of a series of sessions. After a consultation, the medical provider will recommend a customized treatment plan. The most common plan consists of six 30-minute sessions. It is preferred to do two treatments weekly, but another way is one time weekly for 6 weeks for those that have time restraints. Women notice an improvement after the first session, and it continues to improve over the course of treatment.CANDIDATES FOR EMSELLA TREATMENT
The non-invasive Emsella treatment is suitable for women of all ages.
Specifically women with weak pelvic muscles who might experience frequent and sudden urination urges. This could be due to muscles weakening from childbirth, aging, and hormonal changes.
While Emsella is ideal for most women, the following groups do not qualify for the treatment:
- Patients with metal implants. Emsella is not ideal for individuals with metal implants in their bodies. The most common metal implants to be cautious of include intrauterine devices (IUDs). Moreover, metal implants include pacemakers and joint replacements.
- Pregnant mothers. Emsella uses electromagnetic stimulation, which could affect the developing fetus. However, if you are pregnant, Dr. Vanderloos might recommend treatment until after childbirth.
- Patients who have undergone recent pelvic surgery. Emsella is not ideal for women who have had recent pelvic surgery. The electromagnetic pulses from an Emsella chair can interfere with recovery.
Before undergoing Emsella treatment, your gynecologist will assess whether it is appropriate for you. If the procedure is not suitable, Dr. Vanderloos will recommend an alternative.
BENEFITS OF EMSELLA TREATMENT
There are numerous benefits for women who are looking for an alternative treatment for UI. One of the most significant benefits is that no surgery or medication is necessary, which results in little to no side effects. Other advantages include:
- Up to 95% significant improvement after completion of the program
- Strengthen the entire pelvic floor muscles
- Improved sexual performance
- Reduced urinary incontinence
- Reduced fecal incontinence
MONA LISA TOUCH VS. EMSELLA
Weak pelvic muscles can co-occur with other issues like vaginal atrophy. Dr. Vanderloos might recommend Mona Lisa Touch alongside Emsella treatment in such cases. Emsella will strengthen muscles, while Monalisa will fix vaginal atrophy.
What is Mona Lisa Touch? The Mona Lisa Touch is a non-surgical treatment that uses laser technology to stimulate collagen production. The collagen improves the elasticity and overall health of the vaginal walls.
During a MonaLisa Touch® procedure, a wand with a small laser device attached to it is inserted into the vagina. The wand pivots, allowing it to turn 360 degrees, thus targeting the entirety of the area. The laser helps stimulate collagen production by deeply penetrating into the tissues.
